New Toyota Lack of Innovation

Toyota refreshed their most popular medium MPV model, the Kijang Innova. Despite bringing a number of changes to the exterior and interior, many consider the New Kijang Innova to have minimal innovation. Because there are no significant changes, especially in the exterior design sector. How has Toyota responded?

Marketing Director of PT Toyota Astra Motor (TAM) Anton Jimmi Suwandy explained, the pros and cons of the New Kijang Innova’s presence are natural. On the one hand, there are those who consider the new Innova to have minimal changes. But also not a few who gave a positive impression on the New Kijang Innova.

“Regarding consumer responses, I also received a lot of positive feedback on the new Kijang including the new Fortuner. It is more manly, tougher, and also looks more exclusive,” said Anton, in a virtual discussion, recently.

For those who consider the new Innova as if it doesn’t bring any changes, Anton suggests seeing it in person.

“So the name must be a lot of comments. I think that’s normal. And if I personally see this Kijang the design is better seen. Maybe if people just glanced at it and didn’t see directly (the unit), (think) how come the changes (only) like this. So it’s better to see the product directly, “he continued.

For information, the New Kijang Innova has experienced a price increase of around 2-3% from its predecessor version. The car that is close to consumers brings updates from the aspects of comfort, features, exterior and interior design.

In terms of variants, for example, there are additional Luxury Grade types (G Luxury Gasoline and V Luxury Gasoline) which are equipped with a captain seat in the middle cabin. Previously, this feature was only available in type Q and Venturer.

Talking about changes to the exterior, all variants of the New Kijang Innova get a few touches starting from the New Grille Design with Dark Gray Paint and Chrome List Ornament, New Side Turn Signal Lamp Design with Black Ornament, to the New Two Toned 16 “Alloy Wheel.

On the safety side, all variants of the New Kijang Innova and New Venturer are now equipped with Convenient Rear Camera, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Hill Start Assist (HSA) features. Especially for New Venturers, there are additional safety features in the form of Dual, Knee, Side, and Curtain Shield Airbags.

Before the Corona virus pandemic occurred, Innova sold an average of up to 4,000 units per month. During the pandemic, this model was only able to sell 2,000 units per month or a decrease of up to 50%. With the New Kijang Innova, Toyota hopes that its sales will be close to what it was before the pandemic.
